PHNA System Overview & Installation Guidelines

1. PHNA Trass Under Turf

Pedestrian or Vehicular Traffic

  • Trass Bedding Mix: PHNA Xtreme Trass Bedding Compound and approved 1/8" - 3/8" angular or rolled clean aggregate.
Mix at a minimum volume ratio of 1:4 (Xtreme Trass Bedding Compound : Aggregate).
Example: At a 1:4 ratio, one 55 lb. bag of Trass Bedding mortar + four 5-gallon buckets (approx. 55 lbs. each) of aggregate.
  • Apply construction adhesive in strips to maintain the permeability of the Trass Bedding.
  • Prepare and compact sub-grade and #57 stone as per architect/engineer's recommendation.
  • Do not compact Trass Bedding; smooth with a trowel for an even surface.

2. PHNA Full Paving System - Porcelain Tile

Pedestrian Traffic Loads

  • Trass Bedding Mix: PHNA Xtreme Trass Bedding Compound and approved 1/8" - 3/8" aggregate.
Mix at a minimum volume ratio of 1:6 up to 1:4 (Compound : Aggregate).
Example: At a 1:4 ratio, one 55 lb. bag + four 5-gallon buckets (approx. 55 lbs. each) of aggregate.
  • Prepare and compact sub-grade and #57 stone as recommended.
  • No compaction required for PHNA products during installation.
  • No edge restraint required, but Trass Bedding must stay flush at edges and not "cave in".
  • Construct with a slight slope, pitched away from buildings.
  • Expansion joints: Design with an engineer; recommended at points where bedding contacts building foundations, pools, or other concrete structures.

3. PHNA Full Paving System - Porcelain Tile

Light Vehicular Traffic Loads

  • Trass Bedding Mix: PHNA Xtreme Trass Bedding Compound and approved 1/8" - 3/8" aggregate.
Mix at a minimum volume ratio of 1:4 (Compound : Aggregate).
Example: At a 1:4 ratio, one 55 lb. bag + four 5-gallon buckets (approx. 55 lbs. each) of aggregate.
  • Prepare and compact sub-grade and #57 stone as recommended.
  • No compaction required for PHNA products during installation.

4. PHNA Xtreme Gravel Lock

Light Vehicular Traffic / Driveways

  • Trass Bedding Mix: PHNA Xtreme Trass Bedding Compound and approved 1/8" - 3/8" aggregate.
Mix at a minimum volume ratio of 1:4 (Compound : Aggregate).
Example: At a 1:4 ratio, one 55 lb. bag + four 5-gallon buckets (approx. 55 lbs. each) of aggregate.
  • Prepare and compact sub-grade and #57 stone as recommended.
  • No compaction required for Trass Bedding during installation.
  • Xtreme Gravel Lock: Only light hand compaction with a finishing trowel needed.
  • Allow Trass Bedding to cure for a minimum of 72 hours before installing Xtreme Gravel Lock. Prevent rapid drying.
  • Expansion joints: Design with an engineer; recommended at points where bedding contacts building foundations, pools, or other concrete structures.

5. PHNA Xtreme Gravel Lock

Pedestrian Traffic

  • Overall thickness of Xtreme Gravel Lock should be at least 3 times the average diameter of the gravel.

Radiant Heat over Slab

  • Trass Bedding Mix: PHNA Xtreme Trass Bedding Compound and approved 1/8" - 3/8" aggregate.
Mix at a minimum volume ratio of 1:6 up to 1:4 (Compound : Aggregate).
Example: At a 1:4 ratio, one 55 lb. bag + four 5-gallon buckets (approx. 55 lbs. each) of aggregate.
  • No edge restraint required, but bedding must stay flush or extend beyond the edge of the pavers.
  • Construct with a slight slope, pitched away from buildings.
  • Expansion joints: Design with an engineer; recommended at points where bedding contacts building foundations, pools, or other concrete structures.

8. PHNA Full Paving System

Over Existing Concrete Slab

  • Trass Bedding Mix: PHNA Xtreme Trass Bedding Compound and approved 1/8" - 3/8" angular or rolled clean aggregate.
Mixed at a minimum volume ratio of 1:6 up to 1:4 (Xtreme Trass Bedding Compound : Aggregate).
For example, at a 1:4 ratio, one 55 lb. bag of Trass Bedding mortar should be mixed with four 5-gallon buckets (approx. 55 lbs. each) of appropriate aggregate.
  • No edge restraint is required, but ensure the Trass Bedding at the edges of the paving area stays flush with the outer edge of the tile and does not "cave in" underneath, or that it extends out beyond the edge of the pavers.
  • Although this system can be constructed with varying degrees of permeability, it is recommended that the surface still be constructed with a minor slope and pitched away from buildings.
  • Expansion joints should be designed in coordination with an engineer, but it is recommended that expansion joints be placed anywhere that the Trass Bedding would otherwise be in direct contact with building foundations, pools, or other concrete foundations that may experience movement.

9. PHNA Full Paving System

Radiant Heat over Aggregate

  • Trass Bedding Mix: PHNA Xtreme Trass Bedding Compound and approved 1/8" - 3/8" angular or rolled clean aggregate.
Mixed at a minimum volume ratio of 1:6 up to 1:4 (Xtreme Trass Bedding Compound : Aggregate).
For example, at a 1:4 ratio, one 55 lb. bag of Trass Bedding mortar should be mixed with four 5-gallon buckets (approx. 55 lbs. each) of appropriate aggregate.
  • Sub-grade and #57 stone should be prepared and compacted per architect or engineer's recommendation, but no compaction is required at any point during the installation of the PHNA products themselves.
